News Release MAY 29, 2008 11:05AM We have just been advised today that the replacement of the railway bridge north of Santa Barbara has been postponed and will be rescheduled in late summer or early fall 2008. The railroad and Amtrak are saying that this is due to a delay in the shipment of the bridge materials needed to do this job. Once all of the materials are in place No. 14 and perhaps No. 11 will be detoured over Tehachapi. We will continue to post the latest updates on this website as we receive them. For those clients holding confirmed reservations, we have mailed to you a notice of this postponement and all of your options. Please wait until you receive this updated notice before contacting us. Please do not call our reservation line at this time. Our phone lines have been jammed with calls the past few days regarding this detour. Other clients calling us to book on other tours cannot get through. If you need to contact us please send your letters by: E mail, fax , or US mail.
E mail: tut@PSLN.com News Release MAY 12, 2008 9:15AM According to our sources we are expecting to hear from Amtrak regarding the new dates for the detour very soon now. Keep checking this website, as we will post it as soon as we receive the new date or dates.
News Release Union Pacific announced today that the materials needed to repair the bridge north of Santa Barbara will not be on the job site until mid to late May 2008. Because of this the scheduled detour of No. 14 has been postponed. This detour will take place in mid/late May or early June. Also their is now a chance that No. 11 , the southbound Coast Starlight could also be detoured via Tehachpi. A new date will be set soon. Keep watching our website for updates. TO OUR CLIENTS WHO HAVE ALREADY BOOKED-YOU HAVE FOUR CHOICES 1. You can receive a full refund at this time and then rebook later if you choose to do so. We do know that the price per person will increase because of extra deadheading expenses for our private rail cars. Amtrak has advised us that they will not switch out the cars in Sacramento so our cars will have to run all the way to Klamath Falls or perhaps Portland, Oregon and return. 2. Once the new date or dates are set by Amtrak and the UP in the next couple of weeks and you find the new schedule will not work for you we invite you to this special option of allowing TUT to add an additional $100 to the payments you have already made and then applying the total amount towards another tour offered by TUT that will run by December 31, 2009. 3. You can hold onto your reservation at this time until the new dates are set by Amtrak and UP in the next couple of weeks. Once the new dates are set we will mail out a new notice to everyone with the full itinerary. We will give everyone enough time to decide if the new dates will work for them. If the new dates work then the lower price is already locked-in. If the new dates do not work then they can ask for a full refund or apply their monies towards another tour that would run by December 31, 2009. See option 2. 4. You are welcome to keep your reservation in force in which we will guarantee you the lower price. This will be the price you have already paid. Your lower price will be locked in. You will not have to pay anymore for your tickets if you keep the same option that you are now booked on. UPDATED MAY 29, 2008 TO OUR CLIENTS : PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING REGARDING YOUR RESERVATIONS FOR THE "RARE MILEAGE" OVER THE TECHACHAPI LOOP. WE STRONGLY SUGGEST YOU READ THE FOLLOWING CAREFULLY. ONCE YOU UNDERSTAND YOUR OPTIONS YOU WILL KNOW THAT-YOU WILL NOT LOSE ANY MONIES FROM PAYMENTS ALREADY MADE. 1. No cancellations , refunds, or switching to other tours will be accepted by the Trains Unlimited, Tours Reservation Office; until after the new dates have been announced, on this website and to the public. Once the new dates are announced, we will post this information on our website and mail you a notice. You will have plenty of time to decide what you would like to do. 2. If you are excited about obtaining this "rare mileage" and hold onto your reservation, the price you originally paid for this excursion ,which is on your invoice, will not change. This price is locked-in. (Prices for this excursion have already been increased due to higher than expected expenses for running it.) The new date will be set by Amtrak and UP, in the next couple of months. Once the new dates are set; you will receive a bullitin that will include the dates, options and full itinerary of the Techachapi Reroute. We will give everyone enough time to decide if the new dates will work for them. 3. If the announced NEW DATE will NOT WORK for you we are offering you this special Option. Trains Unlimited, Tours will add an additional $100 to the payments you have already made and then apply this total amount toward another tour offered by TUT that will run by December 31, 2009. This is a win/win situation for all of us. As a Tehachapi ticket holder, you will receive an advanced list of all tours for 2009 as soon as the schedule is completed in mid July. Note: Once you cancel your space on Tehachapi and take this offer, any rebooking of this tour will be at the new, higher price; as posted on our website. Should you find that the new dates do not work for you; You may request a full refund or apply your monies towards another tour that TUT would run by December 31, 2009, as stated above. |

Very rare mileage and a one chance only to ride over the famous freight only Tehachapi Loop on Sunday TBA, 2008. This is the route of the former Southern Pacific San Joaquin Daylight and Santa Fe's crack San Francisco Chief. These two trains have been gone for over 37 years and only freight trains run over the Tehachapi Route. All of this will change for one day only as the northbound "Coast Starlight" , train No. 14 will be detoured via Tehachapi.
Amtrak is now making the final arrangements to detour the "Coast Starlight" Los Angeles-Palmdale-Mojave-Tehachapi-Bakersfield-Sacramento on Sunday TBA only due to scheduled track work that will close the Coast Route north of Santa Barbara. Amtrak is fully expecting this detour to happen with the support of the Union Pacific and is gearing up for it now.
We have reserved with Amtrak the placement of three private rail cars on the rear of No. 14 from Los Angeles to Sacramento running via Tehachapi Loop on this date. The private rail cars will be the ex-PRR Colonial Crafts Lounge-Sleeper, ex CZ Silver Lariat Vista Dome Coach and the ex-CZ Silver Solarium Vista Dome-Lounge-Sleeper Rear end Observation. The Silver Lariat and Silver Solarium are stored in Oakland and we must move then down the coast to Los Angeles on TBA to get them into position. The Colonial Crafts is stored in Los Angeles , but after the Tehachapi run must be run down the coast back to it home base in Los Angeles. All of these positioning moves for the three cars is costing big bucks $$$ so we are selling spaces on all segments to recover the fees we must pay Amtrak for these movements.
TBA: (L-D) The California Zephyr Vista Dome cars Silver Lariat and Silver Solarium will be placed on the rear end of Amtrak train No. 11 the southbound "Coast Starlight" coming in from Oregon. No. 11 is scheduled to arrive in Oakland at Jack London Square at 8:35am and depart at 8:50am for Los Angeles via the Coast Route through Santa Barbara. Arrival in Los Angeles is scheduled for 9:00pm. We suggest lodging at the Best Western Dragon Gate Inn which is only 3 blocks from Los Angeles Union Station. The hotel phone number is (213) 617-3077 or toll free at 1-800 282-9999.
![]() TBA: LOS ANGELES-MOJAVE-TEHACHAPI-BAKERSFIELD-STOCKTON-OAKLAND: depart Los Angeles Union Station at 10:15am with our three private rail cars coupled to the rear of Amtrak No. 14, the northbound "Coast Starlight". Our private car consist at the rear of No. 14 will be the Colonial Crafts, Silver Lariat and Silver Solarium. The round end observation car Silver Solarium will bring up the rear of the train. At Burbank Junction we start our detour and head out on the Valley Subdivision soon entering tunnel 25 which take us under San Fernando Pass and out into Newhall and then up the Soledad Canyon through Ravenna and Vincent before dropping down into the Mojave Desert at Palmdale Junction where we enter onto the Union Pacific's Mojave Subdivision and run north through Lancaster and on to Mojave. At South Mojave the BNSF's line from Barstow joins the UP and we start the long climb into the mountains. Departing Mojave the freight traffic can be very intense at times as we turn northwest and start the steeper climb up into the Tehachapi Mountains. For the next 24 miles between Mojave and Cable is double track with traffic set up to handle trains in both directions. If conditions are just right we could be crossed over and run around a slow moving freight or two before arrival at Cable. From here is it single track down the steep mountain with passing sidings every few miles. Five miles north of Cable is the famous Tehachapi Loop and then another 10 miles further down the mountain we start down the Cliff-Caliente Loops. We will run through 12 tunnels on the north slope of the Tehachapi Mountains.
Once in Bakersfield we run north over the BNSF, route of Amtrak's San Joaquin Valley passenger trains to Stockton. Once in Stockton Amtrak is considering switching No. 14 to the former WP mainline and run it over Altamont Pass and directly into Oakland arriving very close to it's regular schduled time of 9:32pm. Then it would continue on to Sacramento and points north. But, there is still a chance Amtrak could run No. 14 from Stockton right to Sacramento and then on north to Oregon.
running through the Soledad Canyon area.
![]() TBA: (L-D) On the last day of our Tehachapi adventure we will be onboard the Colonial Crafts lounge-sleeper car which will be attached to No. 11 coming in from Oregon and arriving in Oakland at 8:35am. Departure from Oakland is scheduled for 9:00am running down the coast via Santa Barbara and arriving in Los Angeles at 9:00pm.
